ja’ / buuts’ / t’aan (Water / Smoke / Word) is a multichannel video and sound installation emerging from a multidisciplinary and iterative project that encompasses public engagement, print, and media works. The presentation, made in collaboration with Patricia Vázquez Gómez and a group of Mayan youth living in Northeast Portland, explores the relationship between these young people and their mother tongue: maayat’aan (Maya Peninsular/Yucatec Mayan), an Indigenous language of present-day Yucatán, Mexico. Mostly shot in the Yucatán municipalities of Maní and Dzan with audio recorded in Portland, ja’ / buuts’ / t’aan investigates personal struggles to learn and preserve Indigenous languages that mirror enduring societal failures to support their survival. Water, smoke, and language act as framing devices to highlight historical and contemporary Indigeneity among the Mayan diaspora in the U.S. 

This immersive installation features footage on several screens positioned throughout PICA’s warehouse accompanied by layered sound elements. ja’ / buuts’ / t’aan is intended to be viewed from beginning to end, and there will be several show times throughout the day during the run of the exhibition.

ja’ / buuts’ / t’aan una instalación multicanal de vídeo y sonido que tiene origen en un proyecto multidisciplinar e iterativo que abarca obras de participación pública, impresas y audiovisuales. La presentación, concebida por Patricia Vázquez Gómez y hecha con un grupo de jóvenes mayas que viven en el noreste de Portland, Oregón, explora la relación de estos jóvenes con su lengua materna: el maayat'aan (maya peninsular/ maya yucateco), una lengua indígena del actual Yucatán, México. Rodada en su mayor parte en los municipios yucatecos de Maní y Dzan, con audio grabado en Portland, ja' / buuts' / t'aan investiga las luchas personales por aprender y preservar las lenguas indígenas, que reflejan los persistentes fracasos sociales que amenazan su supervivencia. 

Esta instalación es inmersiva, con imágenes en varias pantallas situadas por todo el anexo del PICA, acompañadas de elementos sonoros en capas. ja' / buuts' / t'aan está diseñada para ser vista de principio a fin, y habrá varios horarios de proyección a lo largo del día durante la duración de la exposición.
