The following description was submitted by the event organizer.

In Present Space, a solo exhibition of new work by Kim Smith Claudel is both a meditation on and a (failing) attempt to capture the ephemeral complexity of being a spirit in a physical world. With dancing shadows, paintings that are not objects, and sculptures in decay, In Present Space embraces the un-holdable and fleeting nature of living: the intersections of time, space, and matter that make up present reality and past memories.

Kim Smith Claudel is an interdisciplinary artist in Portland, OR. This is her first solo exhibition at Carnation Contemporary. She has recently shown her work in Kyoto, Japan and has upcoming exhibitions at Mt. Hood Community College, The Vestibule, and The Painting Center. She was a visual resident at the Boston Center for the Arts, and a research artist at the MIT Media Lab. In Fall 2024, she will be in residence at Building 5 in Portland. She holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MS from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 7, 5-8 PM
Artist Talk: TBD
