Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their distinctly Southern take on rock and roll, Kings of Leon have steadily morphed into an adventurous arena rock outfit throughout their career. The quartet's earliest records, such as their 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood and 2004's Aha Shake Heartbreak, were steeped in retro sounds; by the time of 2008's Only by the Night, they had left the confines of the garage for an arena-sized stage. The result was a huge album that twinned the sleek atmosphere of Coldplay with the introspection of Americana while spawning the anthemic international hits "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody." The album made them stars, and subsequent Come Around Sundown, Mechanical Bull, When You See Yourself, and 2024's Can We Please Have Fun maintained their global popularity.
