A Long Road to Travel: The Service of Japanese American Soldiers During World War II
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
More than 400 second-generation Japanese American (Nisei) soldiers from Oregon served in the U.S. military during WWII. They played a pivotal role in both Europe and the Pacific at the same time that many of their families were incarcerated in concentration camps back home. A Long Road to Travel tells these soldiers’ stories and their often arduous journeys to serve their country, overcome prejudice, and achieve recognition for their heroism.
In 1944, the names of 16 Nisei soldiers were erased from the Hood River honor roll at the county courthouse. In response to this shameful act, American Legion Post 22 received hundreds of letters at the time, which they recently donated to JAMO during a special Veterans Day ceremony and official apology. Material from this one-of-a-kind, historic collection will be added to the exhibition for its Portland debut.
