Biamp Portland Jazz Festival: Erykah Badu
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as neo-soul's godmother. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan and has earned her four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and the lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically acclaimed studio albums and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.
