Sports
From seeing a soccer match with the Timbers Army to rooting for Rip City and the Trail Blazers, Portland loves its sports.
Portland is proudly home to a thriving sports scene, thanks to its world-class venues such as Portland International Raceway and the Columbia River Gorge, along with its professional franchises, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Timbers, Thorns and Winterhawks. We also have multiple baseball teams and the international championship-winning Rose City Rollers roller derby team. Whether you’re a die-hard viewer, recreational participant or just looking to enjoy the city’s sports culture, Portland guarantees a winning time.
The Portland Trail Blazers and Rip City Remix
Founded in 1970, the Portland Trail Blazers have always called Portland home — and they have the lifelong fans to prove it. While locals long for another championship banner (something we’ve missed since 1977), the city’s loyalty runs deep. You’ll find tributes to players past and present on basketball courts and on fans wearing jerseys across the city. The Blazers play at the Moda Center, just across the Willamette River from downtown and within walking distance of the Oregon Convention Center, offering easy access on foot or via MAX Light Rail.
New to Portland as of the 2023–24 season, the Rip City Remix play in the NBA’s G League, which showcases young talent on the verge of making the Trail Blazers roster. An affordable family option, the G League’s season runs November–March. The Remix play at Chiles Center.

The Portland Timbers and Thorns
There is a reason the nickname Soccer City, USA has stuck as one of Portland’s leading monikers, and it starts with the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns. Winning franchises in the MLS and NWSL, respectively, the Timbers won the MLS Cup in 2015 and the Thorns are three-time champions (2013, 2017 and 2022). Both teams play at Providence Park, a phenomenal 25,000+ capacity, soccer-specific stadium in the Goose Hollow neighborhood. Home games can be seen from February to October.
The Portland Pickles and Hillsboro Hops
On a warm summer day, nothing beats the smells and sounds of the ballpark. The Portland Pickles and Hillsboro Hops deliver on the baseball field and in the stands with inventive promotions and nods to local culture. If you’re looking for a fun, relaxed game in the April–September window, baseball in Portland might just be the thing.
The Portland Winterhawks
The three-time Western Hockey League Champion Portland Winterhawks may not boast big names, but make no mistake — the NHL starts here. In fact, the major-junior-league Winterhawks have sent more than 100 players to the NHL, including hall-of-famers like Mark Messier and Cam Neeley. The team’s storied history includes being the first U.S. franchise of the Canadian Hockey League, when they relocated from Edmonton in 1976.
While these are juniors ranging in age from 15–20 years old, the talent level and environment in Veterans Memorial Coliseum are undeniably professional caliber. In fact, the team is a perennial contender, which has won the Ed Chynoweth Cup three times and the Memorial Cup twice in five appearances.

The Rose City Rollers
Twenty years in, the colorful characters of Rose City Rollers deliver the speed and ferocity to rival any pro wrestling match or rodeo you might encounter. Teams like the Break Neck Betties do battle with Guns N Rollers, on the flat track at the 400-person capacity Hangar at Oaks Park.
Beyond the action on the track, the Rose City Rollers are a strong community organization, comprised of 400+ women, girls and gender expansive individuals. In all, the league has four home teams, an internationally-ranked travel team, two junior derby programs, a developmental competitive program and a recreational program for skaters of all ages.

Golfers will enjoy Portland’s selection of affordable municipal courses, including Eastmoreland Golf Course and Heron Lakes Golf Club, along with private-caliber public courses such as Pumpkin Ridge, Langdon Farms and The Reserve, which are short drives from the city.
On the recreational side of things, look no further than The People’s Courts for pickleball, ping pong, bocce, cornhole or disc golf in a casual bar-and-restaurant environment.
Grand Central Bowl & Arcade maintains an impressive food and drink selection to imbibe between games of bowling or pinball, while Mike Bennett’s Wonderwood Mini Golf transports you to a world of pure imagination over 9 holes of putt putt golf.
If playful amusement is the pace you’re looking for, Portland has you covered with some fantastic arcades such as Punch Bowl Social and Ground Kontrol.
