A Storied History Blossoms Into “Beervana”

Portland’s beer buzz began in 1984, when both the BridgePort Brewing Company (now closed) and Widmer Brothers opened facilities in the Pearl District, not far from where Henry Weinhard’s brews were made back in the 1860s. McMenamins opened Oregon’s first brewpub the following year, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, McMenamins has more than 50 locations in the Northwest, and Portland’s 80+ breweries are distributed across the city with some crawl-worthy clusters in every quadrant.

Beer

North Portland

Celebrated year-round as a destination for crave-worthy eats and independent boutiques, North Portland’s Mississippi/Williams and St. Johns neighborhoods also pack a punch for local craft brews. Upright Brewing, Migration, and Stormbreaker Brewing all have unique locations within just minutes of each other. Stormbreaker’s second location in the heart of St. Johns and nearby Euro-inspired Occidental Brewing are two of the reasons the area is so beloved. The St. Johns Beer Porch is also a fantastic option for food cart dining and drinking.

Northwest Portland

Home to the historic Brewery Blocks, the Pearl District is a great place to start a beer-tasting adventure. Deschutes Brewery & Public House, Backwoods Brewing and 10 Barrell are all tasty options with Northwest roots outside the city. Nearby Portland-born Breakside Brewing is a worthy option as well. Dog lovers will rejoice in the brews and bites at Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, while Kells Brewery is your spot for an Irish pub experience.

Great Notion Brewing’s flagship location features a large outdoor beer garden and expansive taproom in the heart of the Alberta Arts District. Meanwhile, you’ll find Steeplejack Brewing’s Northeast location in a beautifully restored church that dates back 100+ years.

Culture & Events Beyond The Brewery

While you can’t have a great craft beer culture without great beer, it may be the happenings beyond the breweries and pubs that really make Portland stand out—from February’s Oregon Craft Beer Month to June’s properly long 10-day Portland Beer Week and December’s Holiday Brew Fest. If you’re a craft beer lover, you’ll find something to get excited about year-round.

Named after the sampling port found on fermentation vessels, Zwickelmania is an annual celebration that includes brewery tours and tastings. Portland’s Oktoberfest offerings are stellar whether you find yourself downtown, in North Portland, at Oaks Park or in nearby Mt. Angel. Lesser known but equally tasty festivals such as Nano Fest and Mayfly’s Kolsch Fest are just two events that pack Portland beer lovers’ calendars each year.

Autumn Brings Fresh Hop Season

While most craft beers feature dried hops, the Willamette Valley’s autumn hop harvest gives Portland beermakers a bountiful selection of fresh-picked “wet” hops for limited-edition creations loaded with peak-season flavors. Stop by any local brewery in September, and chances are good that you’ll get a taste. If one-stop-shopping is more your style, October brings both the Portland Fresh Hops Fest at Oaks Amusement Park and the Hood River Hops Fest with more than 60 fresh hop beers from dozens of Northwest breweries.

Beer Festivals in Portland

Portland isn’t shy about its love of beer — the city has nearly as many beer festivals as it does breweries.
