On Feb. 22, 1965, David Lett planted the first pinot noir vines in the Willamette Valley, and the New World’s first Pinot gris. One of the Willamette Valley’s oldest wineries, the Eyrie Vineyards was founded by David and Diana Lett in 1966. Located in the Red Hills of Dundee, about 30 miles Southwest of Portland, it was named for the red-tailed hawks who make their home in the fir trees at the top of the first vineyard plantings. The winery is in nearby McMinnville.
